Me and my Tennis Pointer!

Functional Tennis Pointer: What’s The Point?

The Tennis Pointer is one of those gadgets that pupils stare at with eyes that say ‘what on earth is that’? They very quickly move on to say something along the lines of ‘why have you got a giant wooden spoon’? Well let me tell you why…

The Tennis Pointer is a brilliant device for helping you to hit in the sweet spot of the racket.

The spoon part of it may look ridiculously small but even youngish juniors can soon adapt to rally with it.

Because it is such a small hitting zone, I find that players really dial up their concentration and focus when hitting with The Tennis Pointer because if they don’t they’ll miss the ball.

It can be an effective tool for practising all the different shots.

From a volleying point of view, you can clearly demonstrate to pupils how you want them to hit the ball in front of their shoes and you tend to find players swinging less and guiding more so they can get a clean contact on the ball.

Serving wise, it is a great tool for pupils to focus on getting the contact point in the right position in order to hit the ball across the court and into the correct service box. I’ve found this particularly useful when players who have been using a forehand grip to serve change to the chopper grip as they often heavily slice the ball. The Tennis Pointer helps them develop their flat serve.

Perhaps most of all, I’ve found the Tennis Pointer to be a great way for players to focus on the contact point for their forehands and backhands. I set a challenge of who can get the longest rally with The Tennis Pointer and the players love seeing if they can win! They also like laughing at me if I am the one making the mistake!

One last benefit - after playing with The Tennis Pointer - playing with a tennis racket once again really does seem easy - and you definitely see players hitting less mishits and more in the sweet spot.

The Tennis Pointer was invented by a Czech coach called Jiri Bartos. One of the first players he worked with on with the tennis pointer was Jonas Forejtek who went on to win the Jnr Australian and Jnr US Open Championships!
